The 2006 Competition has followed last year's successes and we have had some excellent and very charming and evocative photographs presented.  Digital photography has taken hold and has meant that several contestants have developed their original images.

The judges this year were: Therese Evans who first suggested that the competition would be a lasting memorial to Stan Woodford and helped set it up, Angela Clear, Chairman of the Parish Council who has supported the project from its inception, Lindsey Maguire from Studio 6 who sponsors the Competition and Barrie Marson who won the Competition last year.

The judges met in the Community Centre at the end of January to view 28 photographs submitted by 10 adults, 7 photographs taken by two girls in the under 18 age group and 3 photographs submitted by 3 youngsters.

Adult photographs include material taken at the Village Fair; the Church Fete; the Folk Festival; the Remembrance Sunday Parade; the Lunch Club Christmas Party; Boxing Day in the Square; Youth Club meetings; by time lapse photography and some evocative local landscapes.  Stuart Courtney from Knowle submitted the winning photograph with his striking swirl of marchers Down Bridge Street on Remembrance Sunday.  Neale Fray's photograph of Mrs Samways caught in the immediate aftermath of the Scout Hut fire was judged second and Michael Carter's vignette of Janet Young at the Church Fete was judged third.  Two other entries were highly commended and one of these was a tranquil early morning scene submitted by David Roger Jones.  A very interesting time lapse photograph of a morning's activity in Manor Close was submitted by Garry Pearson.  There were a number of other excellent entries including those from Bob Brown, Brian Barrett, Ray Hughes, Graham Merritt and Tony Ryder.

Siobhan Spowart and Katherine Lemon who are towers of strength at the Youth Club submitted photographs in the under 18 age group.  These images are from one of the highlights of the Youth Club year, the visit to Paulton Park.  Siobhan's photo of two youngsters at the beginning of an exciting ride was judged first.  Katherine's photo of a closely-knit group enjoying the day was second and Siobhan's photo catching the excitement of one of the rides was third.

Sadly there were only three entries in the under 13 age group but they also catch the excitement of the day out.   Gina Mullins caught her friends at the end of one ride and this photo was judged first.  Dan Redfern came second this year with his "water splash" and Micky Harris came third with her vision of impending dampness!

All the entries are shown here.  I hope to get the original photographs displayed in shop windows round the Square.  They will certainly be displayed at the Annual Parish Assembly when the winners will be presented with their cup and small cash prize.  I hope this year's entries will interest you and persuade you to join this year's competition.  Entry forms can be obtained once again from Studio 6 in the Square, or by e-mail at print@studio-6.co.uk.
